Product Description

Jazz piano harmony has evolved from simple triads and dom 7ths based on the European classical and church tradition to chords built in 4ths rather than traditional tertian or third-based structures. Along with this harmonic shift came new scales or modes that were better suited for improvisation over these rootless, ambiguous "voicings". This piece is in four different sections, each using some variant of the quartal harmony. The first section uses the so-called "So-What" chord, a sonority comprised of three fourths and a major third on top. The second section uses chords built entirely of 4ths, but moves them around in thirds. The third section uses a pedal point to lend a different color to four tertian chords all built on the same root. The last section returns to the original chord, and moves it up and down a minor third. Don't mind all the flats, they will be easier to play than to read! All these gestures are common elements of modern modal jazz, hence the title. It conveys the darker but warmer colors often used in compositions and improvisation of the modern era. Approx duration 2 mins. Pedal for best smoothness and bassline clarity.
