Product Description

This piano solo is taken from an excerpt from "Meditation" scene from Drigo's ballet "La Reveil de Flora" (the return of Spring). It begins with a wintry, dreary scene that gives way to a bright Spring scene . The composer, Drigo, was not only a composer of ballet scores, but also conducted his and others's works. He also replaced the great ballet composer Ludwig Minkus when the latter retired from the Ballet world. He was also a master at adapting the ballet music of past composers and even re-orchestrated Tschaikovsky's Swan Lake. In this piano arrangement phrasing and dynamic suggestions were added to more successfully adapt the ballet score to the piano solo genre. Another editorial addition to this arrangement are markings that what might be called "written-in rubatos" Throughout the piano literature, rubato is needed, but rarely written into the scores leaving it up to "performance practice" to describe this important technic. Here the indications in the score and the recording will add insight to this mysterious concept of rubato. These may also bring to mind the "submerged" pedal effect and rubato of the first movement of Beethoven's Tempest sonata (sometimes referred to as the "soliloqui from the grave") which is said to depict the graveyard sequence from Shakespeare's play ,The Tempest.
