"Midnight Cowboy" is a 1969 American drama film directed by John Schlesinger, adapted from the 1965 novel by James Leo Herlihy. The film stars Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. Set in New York City, it depicts the unlikely friendship between two hustlers: naïve prostitute Joe Buck (Voight) and ailing con man Rico Rizzo (Hoffman), referred to as "Ratso". At the 42nd Academy Awards, the film won three awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is the only X-rated film to win Best Picture and is often seen as one of the greatest films of the 1960s. John Barry composed the score, winning a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Theme. Fred Neil's song, "Everybody's Talkin'", won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, sung by Harry Nilsson. This medley uses the swaying theme at the beginning and a more ballad treatment to close, with the famous song sandwiched in the middle. There are important moments for harmonica, but cued if not available. The musical version of "Midnight Cowboy" premieres in London's West End in 2025.
