The mood varies from joy to sadness and introspection, with an obbligato clarinet lending pathos as only a clarinet can. The vocal writing is simple and direct, with few technical challenges, making the work accessible to most community choirs. In addition, the piano part is comparatively sparse, making room for the text to be heard.
