Toccata Non Grata
By Daniel Burwasser
The title is a playful twist on the diplomatic phrase persona non grataan unwelcome person. In this case, the unwelcome guest is a dazzling, relentless toccata that refuses to behave. From the first measure, the music bursts in unannounced, brimming with rapid-fire passages, sharp accents, and sudden harmonic swerves.
Rooted in the Baroque tradition of composers like Frescobaldi and Bach, a toccata is designed to showcase virtuosic skill, often pushing both performer and instrument to the limit. Here, however, the toccatas bravado is tinged with mischief: phrases dart in unexpected directions, rhythms trip over themselves, and fleeting lyrical moments are quickly swept aside by the next outburst.
Whether seen as a good-natured parody of over-the-top showpieces or a celebration of musical excess, Toccata Non Grata thrives on its own audacity. Like an unruly dinner guest, it may be exhaustingbut its never boring.
