Product Description

Prelude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 3, No. 2, composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1892. The piece was originally part of Rachmaninoff's collection of piano pieces titled Morceaux de fantaisie.

This edition aims to enhance the readability and playability of the Prelude while preserving the original music. It applies modern engraving and editorial refinements that improve upon earlier editions and support expressive, fluent performance. The result is an edition that maintains the integrity of the music while increasing accessibility.

Key editorial refinements include adjustments to staff assignment and formatting for improved readability, clarification of articulations, selective use of sostenuto pedal to support voicing and resonance, correction of a pitch error based on the autograph manuscript, and tempo indications that reflect common interpretive practice.

Editorial Note
The autograph manuscript indicates D-sharp via the key signature, but the first Gutheil edition mistakenly printed D-natural--likely an engraving error. Although Gutheil corrected this in later printings with a cautionary accidental, the original misprint propagated widely and appears in many later editions. As a result, numerous performances still reflect this incorrect reading. This edition uses the original D-sharp.
