In February 1879, John Philip Sousa met Jan van Middlesworth Bellis, the daughter of a carpenter in Philadelphia. The two married in December of that year. For this occasion, John Philip Sousa wrote a march entitled "OUR FLIRTATIONS" in 1880. With this march, he won the competition for director of the U.S. Marine Band that same year, a position he held until 1892, when he formed his own civilian band.
