"Woodwind Quintet No. 1" is a three-movement work for advanced ensembles that features contemporary classical techniques. It's strongly influenced by Paul Hindemith and, in spots, by Jacques Ibert, two composers I was exposed to in my younger days. The first movement, 'Opening,' doesn't have much of a tonal center, but it isn't exactly dissonant, either. It's followed by 'Waltz,' which I think has the feel of a "rusty circus waltz." The final movement, simply named, "Conclusion," shifts tempo during the course of its pursuit to a recap of a final statement from the first movement. It's a challenging piece that showcases each member of the ensemble in turn.
