Program Notes:
Salut dAmour (Op. 12) is a short, lyrical piece composed by Edward Elgar in 1888. It is one of his earliest popular works and remains one of his most beloved miniatures. Elgar wrote this piece as an engagement present for his future wife, Caroline Alice Roberts, a published author. Originally titled Liebesgruss (German for "Loves Greeting"), the piece reflects both personal affection and Elgars interest in continental culturehis fiancée had recently studied German. When Elgar sought to publish the piece, his publisher suggested a French title, Salut dAmour, believing it would appeal more to the continental European market. It was first published under both titles: Liebesgruss (Salut dAmour) .
