Product Description

Quartet #16, Opus 135 in F Major, is Beethoven's final string quartet. It lends itself very well to being adapted for wind instruments, and it is the most concise of his late quartets. It has four movements: Allegretto, Vivace, Lento assai, and Grave, allegro. This quartet is playable by college level students and professionals. The audio sample of the first movement was generated by Aria Player within Finale engraving software. The entire quartet lasts about 27 minutes. The beautiful Lento assai movement is in the dark and rich key of D flat, concert pitch. The final movement features a pair of motives, inversions of one another, that mimick the German riddle: "Muss es sein? Es muss sein!" (i.e. Must it be? It must be!). The entire quartet demonstrates that even late in his life, in spite of his physical challenges including being totally deaf, Beethoven could compose light-hearted and humorous music.
