Product Description

The present Sonata in D is the only known instrumental work by the Basque Pe. Mateo Antonio Pérez de Albéniz (1755 - 1831). Now a favourite of amateur and concert pianists and harpsichordists alike, it was made popular by the Spanish pianist Alicia delarrocha. It is a work of great simplicity and charm. In form, as well as in spirit, it is closer to the sonatas of Scarlatti and Soler than to the sonatas Mozart and Beethoven were composing at the time.

No manuscript of this sonata has ever been found and it was unknown until the Cuban composer Joaquín Nin (father of Anaïs) published it in 1925 as part of an anthology of XVIII century Spanish keyboard music. Though claiming to be in possession of the original, Nin never produced it and there is no trace of it in his estate.

The Spanish researcher Beatriz Montes has cast doubt on the authorship of this sonata and, though not saying so, she suggests it might be a bit of an à la Kreisler mystification.

I have kept close to the "original", only removing some inconsistencies and marking mare clearly the shifts between 6/8 and 3/4, which were not always clear. I have also distributed the bars over four pages, so that the page turn between page 2 and 3 coincides with the end of the A section.
