A contemplative and reflective rendition of this traditional and well-known carol. Although
basically strophic, the melodic and harmonic material is often altered subtly in various ways creating musical
interest and a sense of motion. The piece is filled with melodic alterations, unusual leaps, a variety of dynamics,
and intriguing harmonies. Especially challenging, perhaps ,is the need for the Soprano to start on, and also
return to, unsupported notes, and to create a completely independent vocal part separate from the piano
accompaniment. The repetitive 8th-note-based piano accompaniment, based on a mix of 4th intervals and
extended chords, creates a wash of lyrical fluid background colour which permeates the whole piece giving it a
beautiful ethereal quality. There are a number of different variations on this piece as the performers are allowed
to pick various sections to perform and leave others out. This is great fun and allows the musicians to be part of
the composition as well as the realization of the music. A lovely piece for recitals, concerts and other occasions.
