Product Description

Louis Moreau Gottschalk (the American Liszt) was at the top of his game at the outbreak of the Civil War. A committed Union sympathizer from the South (born: New Orleans) he spent the war travelling from loyal city to loyal city playing his music to raise the spirits of the American people, reminding them of what they were guarding.  The centerpiece of these concerts was his wartime piano fantasy The Union. In the middle of this piano fantasy one hears The Star Spangled Banner.  Gottschalk played The Union at a concert at the White House on 24 March 1864 which was attended by President Abraham Lincoln and his wife.  This arrangement lifts the The Star Spangled Banner from The Union to stand on its own with the text written by Francis Scott Key (1814) as he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.  (Key suggested the song To Anacreon in Heaven - a popular ditty of a London gentlemans club composed by John Stafford Smith - to be the tune for The Star Spangled Banner.  This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with Gottschalks inspired accompaniment.  Performance time: 1:55+-  It is dedicated to those who lost their life on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on 26 March 2024.
