It began life as Maria's song to the Von Trapp children to ease teir fear of lightning when it was first performed in the 1959 debut of "The Sound Of Music." But because her favorite things include sleighbells and silver white winters and packages tied up with string, it has become identified mostly as a Christmas song. Jack Jones was the first to put it on a Christmas album in 1964, followed by many others.
