The Chautauqua movement (popular from 1874-1920) was started at Lake Chautauqua, New York. It was modeled on a summer camp format and featured adult education and social reform. Christian instruction, preaching, and worship were a big part of the Chautauqua experience, although some of them were more secularized and resembled summer school.
Growing up in a hymn singing church, there were 2 wonderful hymns that spoke of the holiness of God: Holy, Holy, Holy and Day is Dying in the West. The first celebrates the morning, the second the evening and night. The hymn tune for Day is Dying in the West is named CHAUTAUQUA and Mary Lathbury wrote the lyrics on the shore of Lake Chatauqua.
