I originally called this quartet Cathy named for one of the Comic Strip Impressions. The character, Cathy, was a psychologically fragile and indecisive young woman. I eventually concluded that this passacaglia was too structured to represent her weakness, so it never made it into my impressions, but I thought the piece could stand on its own.
