Impromptu is a wind sextet written for the advanced high-school level. The trumpet part is slightly easier than the woodwind parts, save for the rapid mute changes.

In compound quadruple meter (12/8) throughout, Impromptu features some rhythmically challenging figures, including 2:3 and 3:4 polyrhythms.

Tonally and formally speaking, the piece is in concert E natural minor, with a B section in the relative G major, returning to E minor for a development section, a sort of jazz-harmony coda, and a piercing fortississimo unresolved tutti minor 9 chord to finish.
