The beginning of each school year in my music classes starts with a thorough review (or introduction) of rhythm. From
my Beginning Orchestra to my AP Music Theory course, we take the time to ensure every student in the class can count
properly. One of my favorite tricks while teaching rhythm is to substitute rests with syllables, sounds or words (I am
quite partial to having my students quack in the place of rests). I found that this fun little switch is enough to keep them
engaged and anticipating the next fun syllable we will use.
Though not technically in duple meter, this Hoedown has the twang of a catchy, rustic fiddle tune and is intended to
help students with counting and anticipating entrances while building orchestral repertoire. My apologies in advance if
you have some trouble with sporadic popping throughout your orchestra. I promise it will pay off come concert time!
The mouth pops create a very cool effect for the audience.
