The inspiration to compose a piano duet came about at the First Young Artists' Piano Duo Concert on May 4, 2008. While listening to the talent of young pianists performing a variety of musical compositions, I became intrigued by the sound of the duet ensembles.
In July, I was invited to attend The First International Piano Music Festival Gala Concerts presented by the Kurosawa Piano Music Foundation. After hearing several of the extraordinary musical talents, I decided to compose a duet, RED CAPTIVATION.
The duet begins with danceable and popular Latin style rhythms, incorporating 7th and 9th chord harmonies. The middle section has a slower sequential melody accompanied by extended arpeggios and scale-like passages. It concludes with the original rhythms and melody in a new key.
RED CAPTIVATION lures the listener with the color of imagination and emotion. Both PRIMO & SECONDO parts have rhythmic quarter-note triplet passages with a jazzy style. There are three key changes.
This is a fun and enjoyable piece for intermediate students and particularly attractive to audiences for recitals and other piano events.
Thank you to Alex and Yoko Kurosawa for their support and interest in my music.
Special thanks to Dr. Sondra Clark for her inspiration and encouragement - to her this piece is dedicated.
