SYMPHONY in E minor, 4th MOVEMENT FOURTH MOVEMENT As far as we know, this is the only symphony composed in Africa. It requires a standard orchestra. It could be played by an average amateur group. For more information, contact alan@science-music.karoo.co.uk. Parts are available. Beginning with a big British militaristic theme, this movement soon becomes more and more exciting, with surprising key changes and rich harmonies. Continuous melodic invention and sudden changes of mood and of dynamics maintain excitement and interest. The brass have a good outing, but contrasting colours are heard, with solo passages for woodwinds and horn accompanied by countermelodies while the march step continues. All the delightful inventiveness we have come to expect in Ted Moon's work. Despite the overall optimism, underlying darkness is present. Look at the other three movements, too: majestic, melodic, quirky, inventive, vivacious and noble.
