In this Level 3.0 (Intermediate) String Orchestra arrangement, Martin Lass has arranged the first movement of Ferdinand Poliakin's "The Canary Polka" for intermediate student string orchestra.
Not only has the arrangement expanded the original violin-piano version for string orchestra, but a humorous take on the piece has been added, consisting of a confrontation between the canary and a cat!
Many techniques are explored, including pizzicato, harmonics, rapid repeated notes, trills, tremelo, and portamento (slides). Players should attend well to the articulations, dynamics, and other markings in order to capture the different moods of each section of the piece, remembering that contrasts are everything.
