RENAISSANCE MIX is a series of 5 dances from the Renaissance: Basse Danse, Tordion, Pavane, Galliard, and Brawles (Branles). The dances chosen to use as a basis for this composition are taken from a publication by Jacque Moderne published about 1550 under the title "Frohliche Musik." These dances are truly music of great fun, and as the title suggests, happiness and joy.
Renaissance Mix is written for an advanced string ensemble, or chamber group, from high school musicians through college, or amateur and professional groups. The music is accessible to players and listeners alike. It is tuneful, has powerful rhythms with interesting advanced harmonies, and deeply emotional.
The entire 5 dances of Renaissance Mix take about 16 minutes to perform. These dances may, be played out of sequence, perform some while leaving others out, or perform just one of the dances. Good historical information for each dance type may be found on-line. If you are performing at a school, suggest that the Dance Department accompany the music with some choreography.
Basse Danse: The word basse describes the nature of the dance, in which partners move quietly and gracefully in a slow gliding or walking motion without leaving the floor. Rhythmic ostinatos provide the impetus in the outer sections, while the middle section has a dreamy, floating feel. Duration is c. 3 min.
