2015 Piano Contest This carol from Samuel Hopkins sounds older than it is, and our arrangement makes it sound newer than it is! A 3/4 - 6/8 hybrid, some measures have two dotted-quarters, while others have three plain quarters. The eighth-notes beneath are beamed to reflect the metric grouping above. The tune is harmonized like old plainchant, in 4ths. The ostinato bass has two alternating notes above an initial bass tone. Sometimes the alternating notes sound like a hemiola, sometimes not.
