INTRODUCTION
This is the first volume in a series designed to give clarinettists little exercises and studies composed as duets. This means that players can explore both parts and, at the same time, acquire valuable experience of simple ensemble playing which is always useful.
Some of the studies are by Hyacinth Klosé, a renowned early 19th century clarinet virtuoso and teacher, who was famous particularly for his authoritative and comprehensive "Clarinet School". These are either as the original or rewritten by the author to add more interest to the parts.
The pieces are not arranged in any progressive order of difficulty so it does not matter where players choose to begin. One of the innovative features of the book is the inclusion of little 'finger' and 'articulation' exercises which can be used for daily practice, supplementing basic scales and arpeggios practice.
Running through the book, players will find one duet study which is given in all major keys from C major to A major and E flat major i.e. all keys with up to 3 sharps or 3 flats. This, too, is basic material for the progressing clarinet player as it concentrates on long notes, as well as dynamic variation and breath control. It will also help with accurate intonation.
Teachers and students will be able to explore the duets studies together - the student starting with the lower part and swapping to the upper part when ready. This will maintain the student's interest and offer twice the enjoyment compared to solo studies and exercises!
