Product Description

This is the middle member of a triptych of Sonatas da Chiesa ("church sonatas"). The first, for woodwind quartet and harpsichord is intended for the Christmas season; The third, for brass quartet and organ, for Easter. With the present Sonata we focus on Holy Week and Good Friday.

All three Sonatas make use of 16th and 17th century German hymns and employ the standard four-movement form associated with the genre. This particular work is the most conservatively written of the three: certainly a bit of sober introspection is not out of place during Lent.

The movements and the hymns which they incorporate are as follows:

I. Andante. Valet will ich dir geben (All Glory, Laud and Honor)
II. Allegretto. Herzliebster Jesu (Ah, Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken?)
III. Largo. O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (O Sacred Head Now Wounded)
IV. Pastorale. Moderato. Christe, du Lamm Gottes (O Christ, Thou Lamb of God)

Performance time is approximately 14 minutes. The Sonata is of course suitable for liturgical use as well as the recital stage.
