The
3 movements of "Jeremiah" summarize 3 main themes of the prophet's
messages: Jeremiah's unwavering warning of coming judgment, the fall of Judah
in 586 BC, and the promised restoration of Israel through the New Covenant.
This tone poem is written in the genre of contemporary classical music and is
intended for the concert stage rather than church preludes and offertories.
Originally composed for violin and piano, it can be performed on several other
instruments.
Movement 3 is the finale of the tone poem. Alongside
the warnings of Gods judgment are the promise of a brighter future for Judah.
Jeremiah sees 70 years in the future when God will bring the exiles back, but
actually much, much further into the future when God makes a new covenant with
His people.
