Mt. Carmel is the ultimate contest between Baal and Yahweh. From morning until nearly sunset the 450 prophets of Baal did everything humanly possible to get Baal to show himself as the god of thunderstorms and fertility as the people of Israel watched. They even cut themselves to add human blood to the animal sacrifice. At twilight, Elijah rebuilt the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice and prayed. Fire from heaven (lightning) not only struck the altar but consumed it completely and evaporated the water that had drenched it. The people fell on their faces and declared Yahweh is God!
This movement is based on four themes: 1. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Lydian Mode) 2. Elijah (Dorian Mode) 3. Ahab (Mixolydian) 4. Prophets of Ba'al (atonal).
The score shows the parts for violin and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments. The flute is featured on the audio and YouTube presentations here.
