Stringissimo is a virtuoso "barn burner" type of piece. High energy from start to finish with a quiet mysterious central passage and a massive dynamic ending. The violas have the melody but there is also a duet between the first violin and first cello. This work also exists in versions for saxophone ensemble and for clarinet ensemble.
