Meditation was written in 1978 during a summer vacation in Vermont. The chord progression is based on a Spanish jazz style but the work also recalls some elements of Bach's four-part chorale writing. It can be played separately or as part of a suite featuring: C.S. Chaconne, Meditation, Tango and Caught between a Music Box and a Calliope, a humorous encore piece. The different moods of each of the movements provide the audience with a voyage in various instrumental colors and expressions. The duration is 3'00.
Meditation for flute quartet was premiered by the Samuel Coles Flute Quartet during the Septième Eté Musical de Jurignac, Petignac, France on July 24, 2007.
