Product Description
Towards New Frontiers is an original composition written in 2013. It was inspired by and dedicated to the Single Reed Society, an enthusiastic group of student musicians at Heart Lake Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. I have the privilege of working with these young saxophonists and clarinetists every week, as they bring me joy through watching them grow both as musicians and as human beings. They approach each new challenge I put in front of them with curiosity, confidence and commitment, each one of them aspiring to be the best they can, building on past experiences and moving forward towards new frontiers.
My beloved bride said upon hearing this piece for the first time that it brought to her mind the image of a train traversing across the Old West, making a few stops along the way to pick up more passengers, then continuing on its journey with renewed energy, finally arriving at its destination. Though I did not have this specifically in mind when I wrote this piece, this notion, coupled with my students natural sense of adventure, seemed like an appropriate expression of the feel of it, as expressed by the title.
Performance Notes:
This piece is playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, (both with an optional Bass Saxophone part doubling the Baritone), or Clarinet Quartet (3 B flat Clarinets plus Bass Clarinet), or by a combination of saxophones and clarinets. In the case of a mixed ensemble, care should be taken with the distribution of parts to achieve a balance amongst the different voices. Duration 3:30
