Do You Hear What I Hear?
Program Notes
Do You Hear What I Hear? is a song written in October 1962, with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne Baker. Regney had been invited by a record producer to write a Christmas song, but he was hesitant due to the commercialism of the Christmas holiday. Regney and Baker, married at the time, wrote it as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It has become a Christmas classic, selling tens of millions of copies and has being covered by hundreds of artists. The song was originally recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale, the group that had also popularized The Little Drummer Boy.
This flute choir arrangement is scored for 4 flutes, alto flute (alternate c-flute part included), bass flute, and optional contrabass flute.
