Based on a poem by William Wilfred Campbell (referred to as one of Canada's "Confederation Poets"), this work for voice and chamber ensemble was commissioned as part of Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations. This composition explores contemporary techniques but is nevertheless a largely accessible work and would be appropriate for most concert settings. Approximately 8.5 minutes in duration, "The Blind Caravan" is a substantial chamber work and is intended for proficient performers. The work blends spoken and sung text and works best if the mezzo-soprano can be amplified in some way.
