Harmonization of the chorale melody was originally done as an undergraduate arranging assignment in 1968. The original idea was to start with a single point of sound and expand to five voices though suspensions and resolutions. The variations came about in 2016 as a composition competition entry at the "Sons of Sibelius" web site for a new brass composition. The work tied for second place.
