Mel Tormé said he found some lyrics started by his friend Bob Wells, who was trying to write down a few lines about winter to cool himself during a very hot day. Tormé added the rest and wrote the music.

Mel Tormé: nicknamed The Velvet Fog for his warm and velvety voice, was not only a jazz singer but also a pianist, composer, and actor. Although he wrote other pieces, The Christmas Song remained his most famous creation.
