Product Description

Thomas (Blind Tom) Wiggins story is an incredible one. Born in 1849 into a slave family, blind at birth, and from accounts likely autistic, he was deemed to be liability. His family was sold to a Columbus, Georgia lawyer named General James Bethune.

At a very early age he could accurately imitate natural sounds like bird songs and rooster crows with his voice. He heard the piano being played by the Bethune daughters, and he couldnt be kept away from it. He would sneak under the window, or under the floorboards to listen to the piano. By age 4 he could play the music he heard from the daughters.

Gen. Bethune provided him access to the piano. By age 5 he composed his first tune The Rain Storm after a rainstorm on the houses tin roof.

By Age 8 Blind Tom was touring, earning Bethune up to $100,000 a year!

March Timpani was composed in 1880 when Blind Tom was 31. It is dedicated to his teacher, Joseph Poznanski. Notable is the introduction which is an altered quote from Chopins Waltz Op. 34 No. 1.
