Product Description

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrinas Hodie Christus natus est is a renowned Renaissance motet composed for double choir (8 parts: SSAB + ATTB or similar voicings) and sung a cappella. The piece was first published in 1575 in Palestrinas third book of motets. It is a sacred work, specifically a Magnificat antiphon for Christmas Day, characterized by a festive and jubilant tone.

The Latin text celebrates the birth of Christ, with the refrain Noe, Noe echoing seasonal joy. Palestrinas setting employs an antiphonal exchange between high and low choirs, symbolizing, as described by conductor John Rutter, the angels in heaven and mortals on earth. The piece features rich polyphony, expressive contrasts, and concludes with an exuberant "Gloria in excelsis Deo."
