Product Description

Inspired by Rachel Carson's environmental book, Silent Spring (1962), which documented the environmental harm caused by the indiscriminate use of DDT, a pesticide which was widely used in the United States at the time. The book let to a reversal in U.S. pesticide policy, a nationwide ban on DDT for agricultural uses, and an environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The composition, Silent Spring, begins with solo instruments imitating the sprouting of seedlings in springtime. The innocence of the opening is overcome by harsh dissonance (chemicals) creating dar and ominous sounds, warning of pending catastrophe. However, the music returns to the openings innocence at the end.
