Star Trek is a science fiction media franchise that began in 1966 with a television series of the same name created by Gene Roddenberry, which later became one of the most popular in television history. The success of the first series has spawned ten other television series (three animated) and thirteen feature films over the course of over fifty years. The so-called "Star Trek expanded universe" has been underway since 2017, with the debut of Discovery, followed by Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, Starfleet Academy, and the film Section 31. Star Trek tells the story of future humans, members of a United Federation of Planets that unites numerous peoples from diverse star systems under a single government, and of their adventures in exploring the cosmos "in search of new life and civilizations, to go where no man has gone before." The Star Trek science fiction universe and its characters are known worldwide and have spawned an unprecedented community of fans. Star Trek has received numerous awards, including 33 Emmy Awards, 5 Hugo Awards, multiple Saturn Awards, and one Academy Award out of 14 nominations for its films.
