"Study in E Major" is a lyrical, expressive solo for classical guitar designed to balance technical clarity with interpretive freedom. Written in standard notation and accompanied by a full tablature (TAB) version, this piece is accessible to both classically trained guitarists and those who may be less confident reading traditional notation. The inclusion of TAB allows developing players to see exactly where to place their fingers, particularly useful given the guitars multiple options for playing the same pitch in different positions.

This study intentionally omits dynamics and articulation markings to encourage personal interpretation. Performers are invited to choose a tempo that suits their style and to use rubato, especially in the more open and expressive second section, which has a quasi-cadenza feel.

Dr. Herbert Midgley has been playing classical guitar since 1990 and has composed a new guitar study on the first of every month since 2000. He holds degrees in music composition (B.M. and M.M.), education (M.Ed.), cinematography (M.F.A.), and educational leadership (Ed.D.). A music educator at the university level since 1999, Dr. Midgley also previously taught elementary music in public schools.
