Product Description

This is a video that shows off the score for my original composition called the "Collection of Vietnamese Folksongs." It includes the audio for what the piece is supposed to sound like. This piece was started in my junior year of high school and it began with me searching YouTube for recordings of folksongs. Originally, it had three movements (Lý Cây Đa, Bèo Dt Mây Trôi, Songs from Bc Ninh Province). Then in my freshmen year of college I took this project further by turning it into a summer research project where I got the amazing opportunity to actually visit Vietnam to learn more about their culture and music. From this, I added a new second and third movement (Music of the Mountains, Anything but Still), with the original second and third movements becoming the new fourth and fifth movements for a total of five movements overall. The piece takes a lot of inspiration from wind ensemble pieces like English Folk Song Suite, Suite Francais, and Lincolnshire Posy, as well as different styles of Vietnamese music (traditional, lunar new year music, bolero from the 1950s-70s). Thank you to my high school band teachers and my wind ensemble class for playing my piece and giving me an invaluable source of support and encouragement. Thank you to my university for graciously funding such a life-changing trip, and thank you to my research advisor for leading me through all of it.
