When the City Goes Dark is based off of a lot of things. The title came from Sweeney Todd, the Musical and the vibe that is set in the beginning of the show - a dark and rather crumbling city. The church bells can still be found ringing though. And that is the vibe I wanted for this piece; dark, beautiful, grandioso, and crazy, (just like Sweeney Todd) accomplished via use of minor and harmonic minor key signatures and constant fluctuations in tempo. Other things that helped inspire this piece were selections from The Witch and the Saint, by Steven Reineke, and Loco Motion, by Todd Stalter. Most of the individual parts were assembled by messing around on instruments or air-playing what those parts would be, then putting those separate parts together to make one thrill of a piece. I hope you enjoy!
