On April 18, 2019, I began writing my first piece, His Memory, inspired by the heartbreaking loss of my best friend, Nigel Shelby. Nigel tragically died by suicide at just 15 years old after enduring bullying for being outed as gay. His passing was the first time I experienced the pain of losing someone close to me, and it left a deep impact on my life. Nigel was incredibly kind, thoughtful, and mature beyond his years. He had the courage to come out to me, and I always admired his bravery and his heart. He supported me, believed in me, and became my spirit guide even after he was gone. His Memory is told in three Acts: Friendship, I Lost You, and His Memory Lives On, each capturing meaningful moments of love, grief, and self-discovery. The piece draws emotional strength from the songs, You Will Be Found from the film, Dear Evan Hansen, and Lose You Now" by Lindsey Stirling (feat. Mako), which remind us that even in grief, hope and connection can shine through. I invite you to listen and reflect on someone youve loved and lost. If you're grieving, please know you're not alone. Take your time. Grief has no schedule, and trust that you have the strength to move forward! Coming out can be terrifying, but its also a courageous act of self-love. If youre struggling with your identity, I want you to remember this: there are people out there who will love and accept you just as you are. Your sexuality doesnt define you; its simply one part of the beautiful, complex person you are becoming. Be proud of your truth. Surround yourself with those who lift you up, and dont let the fear of judgment dim your light. Life is short and precious. Cherish every moment, follow your heart, and never be afraid to stand out. You deserve happiness, love, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself!
