About
Souvenir de Porto Rico, Op. 31, subtitled Marche des Gibaros, is one of Louis Moreau Gottschalks most distinctive compositions, written during his stay in Puerto Rico in 1857. The work blends Romantic piano idioms with rhythmic elements drawn from Afro-Caribbean and Puerto Rican folk traditions, reflecting Gottschalks unique position as one of the first American composers to fuse European and New World musical influences.
This arrangement adapts Gottschalks piano score for guitar ensemble, preserving its rhythmic vitality, melodic color, and structural clarity while exploring the expressive possibilities of the guitar orchestra. Particular attention has been given to emphasizing Latin guitar gesture, such as syncopated rhythmic patterns, percussive effects, and lyrical phrasing that enhance the musics original character and energy.
The scoring is as follows:
· 2 Soprano Guitars (Soprano 1: cavaquinho or mandolin preferred; regular guitar may be substituted if necessary)
· 8 Guitars
· 2 Basses
Designed for both advanced student ensembles and professional groups, this arrangement offers a valuable addition to the guitar ensemble repertoire and provides insight into 19th-century transatlantic musical currents through the lens of Latin American stylistic elements.
