Product Description

Calypso is the immortal nymph that falls in love with Odysseus in Homers epic poem, The Odyssey. Calypso wishes Odysseus to become immortal and stay with her forever, but Odysseus wishes to return home to his wife Penelope. Odysseus is eventually released by Calypso, on Zeus orders, after seven years of imprisonment on her island. Potentially, Calypso could be viewed as an unusually powerful female figure. McCarter argues that Calypso emulates traditional Greek, masculine power ideals and is oppressive towards Odysseus. Odysseus becomes the archetypal subjugated female in the relationship and cries daily about his enslavement. McCarter argues that if Calypsos leadership dynamic resembles male hierarchical structures, such as Zeuss Olympus, Calypso cannot be viewed as a feminist icon. Regardless of Calypsos status as a feminist, there is distortion of hierarchical relationships within the Calypso and Odysseus myth. This distortion causes us to question the purpose of hierarchy and whether it is necessary in relationships. This composition explores and draws inspiration from this subject matter.
