These three pieces are not only tributes to three of my mentors but inextricably bound up with experiences that have helped shape me into the artist and person I now am.

1. Maurice.
I recall a visit I made to Ravels house in Montfort-LAmaury on the outskirts of Paris. I was a fresh 17 year-old full of a thirst for musical sounds and information. It was New Years Eve, dusk and snowing when I walked from the small station to be greeted by a housekeeper who said the place was closed for the day. She took pity on me when I said I had come all the way from London. Visiting the house full of tiny and magical things that seemed to sing quietly to me is a feeling and image I have carried around ever since.

2. Bela.
There I was at university, struggling with the growing pains of emerging from childhood to adulthood, Bartoks gritty beauty matching my darkly dazzling moods.

3. Leos.
In my mid twenties I met an elderly man who was a cellist in pre-war Czechoslovakia - a Jewish refugee. He told me a few things I never forgot. One was how he saw Janacek at a party grab the minister of culture by the lapels of his coat and hold him up against a wall and tell him everything he and his government were doing wrong.
