Sonata para Violino No. 1, "Delírio" by Glauco Velásquez
Glauco Velásquez (18841914) is one of Brazils overlooked musical geniuses a composer of immense emotional depth and refined technique. His Sonata para Violino No. 1, "Delírio" stands as a vivid testimony of his talent and deserves far greater recognition both in Brazil and internationally.

Structure and Style
The title "Delírio" (meaning Delirium or Ecstasy) already suggests that the sonata is meant to express intense, emotional states a characteristic trait of the late Romantic era, when music aimed to capture passion, dreams, and inner turmoil.

The piece follows a traditional sonata form but infused with a Brazilian sensibility, rich with lyrical melodies, delicate harmonic shifts, and deeply personal expression.
Velásquez merges European romanticism (especially the influence of composers like César Franck and early Debussy) with a subtle, almost hidden Brazilian melancholy.

Violin Part
The violin line is richly expressive full of soaring phrases, yearning melodic arcs, and moments of virtuosic flourish.
Yet even in technically challenging passages, the heart of the piece remains lyrical. The violin sings, almost like a voice telling a story of longing, dreams, and deep emotional introspection.

Velásquez avoids showy virtuosity for its own sake. Every note feels emotionally necessary, contributing to the atmosphere of delírio (intense feeling).

Piano Part
The piano accompaniment is far from a mere background: it acts as an emotional partner to the violin, at times supportive and gentle, at other times urgent and agitated.
Velásquez shows a great sensitivity to texture, knowing when to let the piano shimmer like a distant memory and when to give it force to match the violin's passion.

There are moments when the piano almost seems to breathe with the violin creating an impression of two souls intertwined, struggling between rapture and melancholy.
