Product Description

Gerhardt was an early 17th Century Lutheran tutor, hymnist, and archdeacon from Gräfenheinichen, Germany. He wrote "O Welt, sieh hier dein Leben." It calls the listener to consider Christ the Redeemer. on the Cross. This work was published in Johann Crüger's "Praxis pietatis melica" circa 1648. Bach later took this piece and reworked it for his "St. John Passion" [1724] and "St. Matthew Passion" [1727]. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly in then added to sections C and D. This work should not be rushed and played more majestically (Più maestoso) in the last half.
