Product Description

Malcolm Arnolds 'Variations on a Ukrainian Folk-song' was composed for solo piano in 1944 and dedicated to John Kuchmy, a Ukrainian violinist and pianist. Kuchmy was a friend of Arnold and a colleague in the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where Arnold played the trumpet after leaving the Royal College of Music. The Ukrainian folk-song Arnold uses is known as 'Oi ne khody, Hrytsiu', it is also the theme in the American song, 'Yes, my Darling Daughter'. Along with the ten contrasting variations includes a reference to Brahmss 'Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel' (Variation V) and Arthur Benjamins 'Jamaican Rumba' (Variation VII). This transcription for advanced symphonic band brings out the colours and charcaters of Malcolm Arnold's writing and a valuable addition to the repertoire, particularly when marking events concerning Ukraine.
