Product Description

The title of this piece has a dual meaning. In one respect it literally refers to an unspecified small star in a night-sky constellation. In another respect, the work refers to the composer's son (being a 'little star'!) and was composed in time for his 5th birthday in April 2025. This somewhat minimalist piece has an overall basic ternary shape, within the irregular time signature of 5/8. The first section explores much of the piano's higher register, in a dream-like added-note chord sequence, which undergoes a process of increasing rhythmic interplay. This material, and its procedure, is reversed in the piece's final section. The contrasting middle section sees a related four-bar chord sequence act as an ostinato, around which motifs are built up. Indeed, the whole 6-minute piece is built upon the work's initial chord, and uses the white notes of the piano only throughout, in a kind of tonal/modal (lydian) ambiguity.
