I arranged this fascinating Bressan carol for my French choir; it invites you to celebrate, sing, dance, welcome the new baby. It's a 'list' song, suggesting all the things local people can bring to the stable - not babygros and baby oil but the equivalent, in olden times, in Franche Comté. Bring chicken and turkey (and to this day the region is known for the best free-range poultry) and a whole basket of veggies: beans peas lentils squash cabbage turnips - all to make Jesus's soup. Bring also baby stockings, little shirts, bonnets and shawls, all hand-made.
To my delight, verse 1 ends "without him, we were lost"; verse 4 is so much stronger: "without him, we were screwed"!
The harmonies aren't difficult, and the song dances along light-heartedly.
